I shut the door on our kind hosts and immediately growled at myself.

I was okay with being separated from my mate?

It was my sense of duty, I realized, my ingrained desire to respect customs and tradition above all things… including what my fated mate and I wanted.

I hated myself for it, that I thought that way.

And yet, it was my natural reaction.

I wanted to react the way Essak had — it was certainly how I felt.

But as the saying went: A sword thrust spoke louder than any speech.

The room was comfortable enough, not that I expected to be using the facilities in my room often.

I opened the door and checked the Holies were gone before stepping out into the hallway and approaching Raya’s room.

And I growled at myself.

I’d done it again!

Thinking of duty and honor before my own desires.

But with the vigorous and often hostile training I’d undergone from a young age, was it any surprise?

We were taught to serve and respect a higher power, always.

Most often, it was our commanders, or the empire, or the emperor…

Never ourselves.

We were trained to despise the Shadow and everything they represented.

They came together to fight as a common cause… but they never truly belonged to it.

They belonged to themselves.

They were selfish, rash creatures, and it was that trait that we exploited to defeat them.

Today, Essak had done right by Raya, and I hadn’t, and that seared in my heart deeper than I cared to admit.

I knocked on Raya’s door.

“She’s sleeping,” Essak said, standing to one side, his arms folded.

“And you didn’t wake her?” I said, my impression of him and his species suggesting that his selfish desire for pleasure should have trumped any feelings that she might have.

“No, of course not,” he said, and he ran his fingers down the door, just to be closer to her… the same way I had my hand on the door hoop right at that moment.

Essak looked me over and pursed his lips. “I would like to make you an offer.”

I folded my arms, preparing for him to try to outwit me and wrangle some kind of advantage.

“Let’s hear it,” I said.

“Raya will want some alone time and I think we should give it to her.”

“Sounds fine so far.”

“But I think about her all the time, I want to be with her all the time. And if it’s true for me as her fated mate, it must be true for you too.”

I nodded.

“It is.”

“So, I want to make an agreement. We can both be with her any time we wish but — and here’s where the deal comes in — we will take turns with her sexually. Excluding any times she wants to do it with us both at the same time. That’s neutral. But all other times, we will share her equally. Fifty-fifty. And not only for sex. For her time too.”

I pursed my lips in thought.

“How do we record the time?” I said.

“We play it by ear.”

I shook my head.

“That won’t work.”

“Why not?”

“Because time flies like water over a waterfall with her.
